Business Internet Service F.A.Q.
We often receive questions about business Internet Services that we offer, so we thought we would clear them up with some helpful FAQs below. Of course, you can also pick the phone up and speak with us as we would be more than happy to help.
What is Bandwidth?
Bandwidth is the measurement of an internet connection’s speed. Bandwidth measures how much data can be transmitted through your internet connection on a per-second basis. If you frequently use high bandwidth applications such as video streaming, video conferencing or sending of large files, then you will need a high bandwidth connection. You will also need to ensure that you have bandwidth to support all of the users on your network.
What is Latency?
Latency measures how long it takes your transmitted data to reach a server and then come back to you, it is defined as the time delay between when you click something and when you see it. A fast connection with high latency can still feel like a slow connection, this is where the type of network is important. Fiber and cable have low latency, while satellite has very high latency. Wireless connections can have high or low latency depending on utilization and network architecture. Fiber is typically the best latency option.
How much does business internet cost?
You may be surprised by the cost of a business internet plan, it can range anywhere from $45 per month up to $500 per month, depending on your bandwidth requirements. For a business with less than 25 employees which only needs to run low-bandwidth applications such as checking emails or running a point of sale (POS) system, you could most likely find a plan with speeds up to 200 Mbps in the range of $50 per month to $75 per month.
Will Managed IT Professionals charge me any fees?
No, you don’t pay any fees for using Managed IT Professionals to provision your Internet service, however we do receive a commission from the provider of any broadband product you decide to purchase.
Why should I use Managed IT Professionals when looking for broadband Internet service?
The number of available broadband internet service providers and plans is very large, and making a good comparison on your own time can be a costly and time consuming exercise. By following our needs analysis, you can find a broadband plan that will meet your specific performance and budget requirements.
What are the different types of internet connectivity services available?
Understanding the various types of internet is important to making the right choice for your business.
Cable Internet: Cable broadband internet services use a coaxial cable to connect you to the web with speeds tailored to more moderate-to-heavy activities. Online backups are faster, and file management is seamless, even with multiple simultaneous users. If your business has upgraded to using VoIP business phone services for telephone service and teleconferencing, cable internet is a great option.
Dedicated Fiber Internet: With a fiber-optic internet line, you get the best bandwidth and the fastest solution for a business internet connection. However, because fiber-optic lines still require a lot of infrastructure to be built, its limited to a few regions throughout the country. If a fiber-optic business internet line is available in your area, most providers offer reliable, always-on service with blazing fast speeds of up to 10Gbps. That means you could transfer 1TB of data in 15 minutes or less.
Satellite Internet: For more remote areas that may not have access to a wired land line for an internet connection, satellite internet service can help you no matter where you are. Just like with satellite TV, your ISP will install a receiver dish at your worksite to establish an internet connection. Because the connection quality of a satellite line depends on everything from trees to the weather or even sunspots, it offers unstable service with slower transfer speeds when compared to land-based options.
Cellular Internet: Cellular broadband internet can be a great backup internet service in the event that your primary service provider experiences technical difficulties. We would not recommend for your business to rely on Cellular internet as it’s sole internet connection.
How Much Speed Will I Need For My Business Internet Connection?
Internet speed requirements differ based on activities that the network is used for and the number of users on the network. To get a reasonable estimate of bandwidth needs for your office, determine whether or not most of your network uses fall into low or high bandwidth activities. If primarily low bandwidth, multiply the number of users on the network by 3 for a reasonable estimate of mbps speed needed. If primarily high bandwidth uses, multiply the number of users by 10. You’ll likely find that you need less bandwidth than you may have originally thought, also keep in mind that it is a good idea to have a safety net in the amount of bandwidth you purchase, as incremental bandwidth is cheap and bandwidth consumption increases significantly with time due to new applications, network uses and devices. Also, note that a cable connection may not actually give you the bandwidth requested during periods of high network demand.
Should I be concerned with Upload vs. Download Speed?
If you are performing activities that require fast upload speeds, such as video conferencing, cloud backup or sending large files), then you may want to ensure that you have adequate upload speed. Cable connections typically will not give you the same bandwidth speed when uploading rather than downloading due to how they provision their networks.
